Graphics performance isn’t very good, but this is common with compact laptops such as this. Nevertheless, the integrated ATi graphics card provides ample power for watching movies, playing the most basic games and even photo and video editing.

If the first Apple(Apple A1022 Battery) MacBook Air was revolutionary, this is more of an evolution. You get a speed boost, with the RAM now the newer DDR3 standard, and storage comes in the form of an SSD, which avoids the inclusion of moving parts. It also helps the Air to ratchet up the speed in certain situations; whereas the first Air took 70 secs to boot up, the SSD version requires just 28. It’s just as lightweight and attractive as the first Air, but now it’s considerably more functional to boot.

The brighter your screen, the more juice you’re using. If you’re in a dimly lit room, turn down your LCD screen’s brightness. If your device has an autodimming feature that detects the light in a room, use it. Similarly, if you use your smartphone or laptop to play music, lower the volume.

Our test model had a Core i5 520M processor clocked at 2.4GHz, 4GB of DDR3-1066 RAM, a 350GB hard drive, and the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330 discrete graphics chip. All that power was reflected in an impressive WorldBench 6 score of 105, well above the average range for the all-purpose category. As for video game performance, the 1564 is no gaming rig, but it has more than enough power for a user who’s willing to stay within some reasonable resolution and effects limits. The native resolution of the screen is 1366 by 768, and modern games are playable at that level. You pay for performance in 3UR18650Y-2-QC236 battery life, however: Though I expect most models in the category to reach about 4.5 hours of battery life, the 1564 usually manages about 3.5 hours.

“As the first PC brand designed exclusively for small businesses, over the last year, Dell(Inspiron 6400 Battery) has introduced several new Vostro laptops and desktops to serve their distinctive needs. Ranging from our recently announced, super dependable Vostro 230 or future-proof and powerful Vostro 430 desktops, or the ultra-thin Vostro V13 laptop, Vostro products are designed for small businesses helping them stretch their budget and protect their data, and come with dedicated small business services and support to keep a small businesses moving,” added Gruzen.

A downside to the touch input is that the display is susceptible to annoying fingerprint smudges. Also, the viewing angle of this display is decent when the LCD is showing bright colors, but when images are dark, the image quality quickly drops off as you move off-center. As a result, the M505-S4020 is not the ideal laptop if you plan on huddling as a group around it to watch movies.

As Technology Review points out, this isn’t necessarily a quick take-home fix. “If this oscillating field does improve charging time in real batteries, manufacturers will then have to check its effect on other performance metrics such as the number of these charging cycles a battery can withstand and how long it holds its charge.”

The Core i5-540M system also uses integrated Mobile Intel HD Graphics, yet it still manages to be the top overall PCMark performer of this group. While the 3D graphics performance impacts the overall PCMark performance, it’s not enough pull the laptop’s powerful processor down from its pedestal. The same came be said for the E205–comparatively, it doesn’t do so well on the PCMark Vantage Gaming test, but it still puts in a decent showing on the overall test. But while the E205′s Core i5-430M edged out the Core 2 Extreme X9000-based laptop on the CPU tests from the previous page, the X9000 manages to gain the upper hand on nearly all of the PCMark tests here.

I’ve seen the 1.66GHz Intel Atom N330 in nettops like the ASUS(Asus EeePC 701 Battery) EeeBox. A dual core Atom processor, however, is a first on a netbook. Running on two physical processor cores improved performance by a considerable margin, as the previous generation of Atom processors are single-core only. More impressive is that the 1201N ships with 2GB of RAM off the bat (the HP 311 and Lenovo S12 come standard with 1GB). As such, its video encoding score of 3 minutes 19 seconds dominated the S12 (4:51) and Mini 311 (4:54). Even netbooks that run on an AMD Neo processor (like the MSI U210) or an Intel Pentium CULV (Toshiba Satellite T115-S1105)—processors considered speedier than a single core Atom—fell short of the ASUS 1201N in terms of performance.
